Bearing in mind Adam hadn't done any running for a while, Ben intended to keep the dogs' afternoon exercise to a sensible pace. Adam clearly didn't get the memo; after they'd both stretched out and warmed up he took off along Windrush Lane at a fast lope. Which was fair enough, Ben thought. Adam was built like a sprinter, while he was a distance runner. So Ben kept to his usual pace, the dogs at his side, his long legs easily covering the ground. He caught up as Adam began to slow.

They turned off the lane onto a footpath angling around fields, climbing steadily as it went. By then Adam's pace dropped to a jog and he was breathing heavily. Ben matched him stride for stride all the way to the stile at the end of the top field, their every exhale pushing white gusts into the chill air. From then on the footpath wound through woodland, across the ridge of high ground and all the way down to the river.

"This used to be my old stamping ground," Adam panted as he clambered over the stile. "Me and the Compton boys built a tree house in an old oak over there somewhere." He shot Ben a sly glance. "That was where Des Compton and I discovered we were a little queer."

Ben chuckled. "X marks the spot, hm?" He shrugged out of his backpack, opened it up and handed over a water bottle. "So Mrs B knows you're gay?"

Adam nodded. "Ever since she caught me and Des with our hands down each other's underpants."

"Would they be Marge Compton's kids?"

"Yeah. She used to come in and do the housework for Gran a couple of times a week."

"Still does. Fridays and Mondays. Maybe you should get in touch with Des and reminisce, find out if he's a bit more queer these days." Adam choked on a mouthful of water and swallowed hastily. Ben grinned at him and slipped the dogs' leashes. Teazle immediately took off into the trees. Bracken bounded forward, flipped onto his back for a slide through the still-frosted leaves then charged after her, forest-floor detritus caught in his thick coat.

"Pillock," Adam muttered when he finished spluttering. "You seem very laid back about me being gay. Not even slightly wall-eyed. Are you just broad-minded or are you that way inclined yourself?"

"Does it matter?" Ben turned away with a casual shrug. He expected and hoped Adam would leave it there, but he didn't.

"It matters." He stepped nearer, one hand on Ben's arm, holding him in place. "If I was certain you're straight, I probably wouldn't do this." And he pressed his mouth to Ben's.

Shock held Ben still for a moment, Adam's lips cold on his. Then the hot slide of Adam's tongue along the seam of his closed mouth seared through him and he surged into the kiss, relishing Adam's heat and taste. Then common sense kicked in and he broke the kiss.

"Not a good idea," he said over Adam's crow of, "I knew it!"

Adam's triumphant grin morphed into a scowl.
